We have a push on to catalog and reduce our collection.
Which group should I be listing this on ?
Sorry, we don't have the resources to organise shipping.

comp.sys.dec maybe comp.os.vms

I'd recommend sending some info to the cctalk mailing list too. I see a
number of "for sale" and "want to buy" listings float through there.
Generally people that want to save things from recycling.

What server do you see that newsgroup on?

I'd *love* to have one of the LA120's!!! (Especially if the DECWriter
has the APL character set option.) Unfortunately I live on the other
side of the world! But I like it here...

I posted a link to this over at Vintage Computer Forum - I would have suggested you post there yourself, but posts from new users are held for an indefinite length of time before showing up.

Congratulations.

You have managed to hold on to them for so long that they are no longer junk.

Instead, you should consider selling them at auction, as fine antiques.

Many thanks for everyones' answers.

Being at the ends of the earth (Perth) and all of our gear is 240 V
would it even be worthwhile listing these for sale ?

We mainly want them to go to a good home, not be crunched - so not
chasing dollars.

A further question.

Our members lack the depth of knowledge to make informed decisions as to
which items are worth keeping.

For example - we have a Vax 751 in an Integraph badged cabinet.
The cabinet is probably missing some panels and the processor box has
been ratted (though we probably have spare cards elsewhere).

The person we are employing to do the cataloguing just wants to chuck
the whole cabinet.
I, myself, am wondering if this was a particularly significant model in
Intergraph's history.

Is there any newsgroup where we could list items we are considering
throwing and get some feedback on their significance?
Would a web site showing some pictures of each item entice a response ?

Many thanks
Tony

Much computer equipment from that era was strappable for 120V/240V. The only place you're likely to run into trouble is things like disk drives, and they often had internal jumpers to select the proper voltage. Frequency is another concern on disk drives, but this was often a pulley / belt change.

That's the spirit!

If a system can be made operational, or at least the faults determined, there is probably someone who will take it and either get it working or use it for parts. Even if that is beyond your staff's ability, it is almost always worth saving as many pieces as possible in the hope that they will be useful to someone else, or as a spare for a similar piece of equipment that you currently have in working condition. Plus, it is a lot less work to send someone a bunch of boards than it is to move an entire cabinet (the boards might even come back to the US, for example, while it is unlikely the whole cabinet would leave your corner of Australia).

In this case, I'd suggest signing up on the Vintage Computer Forum - the DEC group is here: http://www.vcfed.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?23-DEC
