Source code quotes - Gosling's emacs

Ah yes. Source comments are sort of the graffiti of the information age.

Speaking of source code quotes, does anybody still have a copy of the
Skull and Crossbones "picture" that adorned the header for the display
driver of Gosling's emacs? The code implemented a very intricate algorithm
for changing the minimum number of characters on a serial line terminal.

(Gosling's emacs was the original Unix emacs. Stallman picked it up and
made Gnu Emacs. Unipress picked it up and made money...)

Cheers,
jp

Not quite. Gosling's emacs may or may not have been the original Unix
emacs (I have
used a version of emacs by Warren Montgomery at Bell Labs, which ran on
PDP-11's
under Version 7, and which may predate Gosling's); however, GNU emacs is
positively
not based on Gosling's code. Stallman (and a cast of thouands...) wrote
the original version
of emacs for ITS, and Stallman started from ground zero trying to make a
Unix emacs that
looked like ITS emacs (and Gosling's emacs really isn't very much like
ITS emacs).

While RMS did write much of the original version of EMACS for ITS, he
did start with the code that Gosling posted to the net for GNU emacs.
Gosling sold the rights to Unipress, who later contacted RMS about his
Emacs. By this time, he had rewritten almost the entire editor to be
more to his liking. However, to avoid further legal trouble, he had
some lawyer go over his code and Gosling's code (or was it Unipress',
I don't know) and make suggestions to how the two could look even less
alike. Today, there is no original Gosling code in GNU emacs. It is
entirely the product of RMS (and a cast of thousands) and the FSF.

Details about this were posted to gnu.emacs about a month ago.

Not quite. GNU Emacs *is* based on Gosling Emacs, but legal problems
forced Stallman to rewrite/replace all of Gosling's original code.
This has been explained in detail by RMS himself in gnu.misc.discuss.
It came up most recently when IBM stopped shipping GNU Emacs on the
grounds that the legality of GNU Emacs source was unclear.
