Excerpts from netnews.alt.folklore.computers: 21-Sep-90 Source code quotes - Goslin.. John Pete...@Apple.COM (509) > (Gosling's emacs was the original Unix emacs. Stallman picked it up and > made Gnu Emacs. Unipress picked it up and made money...) Not quite. Gosling's emacs may or may not have been the original Unix emacs (I have used a version of emacs by Warren Montgomery at Bell Labs, which ran on PDP-11's under Version 7, and which may predate Gosling's); however, GNU emacs is positively not based on Gosling's code. Stallman (and a cast of thouands...) wrote the original version of emacs for ITS, and Stallman started from ground zero trying to make a Unix emacs that looked like ITS emacs (and Gosling's emacs really isn't very much like ITS emacs). --Pat.
