|What were the most significant computers of the third generation
|(that is, between 1963 and 1978?)? I'm interested in anyone's
|opinions, but to start the ball rolling, here's a short list
|of computers and the reasons why I chose them...

Adding my irreverent annotations...

|Ferranti Atlas
|	- a Vax delivered 15 years early

Ferranti, yet another company that couldn't stay in the market.

|IBM 360
|	- what more can I say...

Disgusting segmentation scheme, buggy OS/360, hopelessly complex JCL...

|DEC PDP-8
|	- the first low-cost lab/desktop system

Greatest machine for generating constants with one non-load instruction,
great for wasting one's life trying to fit everything you need in
the low page.

|CDC 6000
|	- The first supercomputer (Cray's last CDC system)

Didn't Cray do the 7600 at CDC?

|DEC VAX-11/780
|	- first commercial supermini.

Does VMS have more command options than any other OS? Why do you change
directories with SET DEFAULT? And since you do, why when they have so
much online help you can't figure out how to change directories?

:-) :-) :-) [I'll probably still get flamed :-(]
