If an auto salesman said "don't worry about the details, you'll probably buy a new car within 5 years anyway", I'd be running away. All of the drives I've used, I've used for over 2 years (except the ones that died). And they've all been big enough. Reliability and speed is much more important to me than size (I have 2gigs, with no plans on increasing it anytime soon). Of course, it is computer builders who do all the "memory is cheap, disk is cheap" mantra, knowing that it is usually they who end up being paid to do the upgrade. And a computer builder that implies the two levels of quality are home use and military spec is a builder to avoid. That sort of thinking has taken computers out of the high tech world, and turned them into low tech low quality appliances. (Hmm, if I had scsi, I'd much rather *add* a new smallish drive than upgrade an existing one to a larger drive (meaning I have to migrate everything over, what a nightmare). With IDE, you're stuck with only 2 drives (unless you want to slave them and screw up performance), so the temptation is to make them larger. But that's just me) > > Being a tech ,I have a rather large dead HD collection ,not meny > Quantams or Seagates ,but I've got heaps of dead Maxtors ,too meny dead > Weastern Digitals(I love the little ping they make when there dead :) ) > ,100% of the Die Young's we sold(apptly named) ,and quite a few dead > Fujitsu's , > > What brand would you recomend? > > Alecto. -- Darin Johnson darin@usa.net.delete_me
