The story of where he got the VON in his name is told in "The Making of the Atomic Bomb" (book). If I am not mistaken, his father received a title from royalty [not unlike receiving the title SIR in England] and John cut it short and only kept the VON. Please don't take this as fact, because I am only trying to remember something I glanced over a while ago. Shaul Peleg
