}A knowledgeable answer has already been given (Hi, Fred!) -- Digital
}Debugging Tape appeared in about 1965 for the PDP-5 (and -8),
}successor to the more simple minded ODT (Octal Debugging Tape). So
}ddt is nearly thirty years old.

Indeed. Fred was quite right: DDT was developed by the hackers at the RLE
lab at MIT on their PDP-1. By 1965 it was (relatively) old stuff:
1961 on the PDP-1 is a closer estimate.
