	Well, I have an AT clone with a herc (or herc clone, not sure, but it works like one) card in it, which certainly _did_ lead to the destruction of my mono monitor.

	I wanted a screen saver. Along I went to my Uni's PC-SIG CD rom, and snaffled a likely looking one. I ran it on my system at home, seemed to work fine the first time I ran it and let the screen blank out (though not for long), so I walked away to the other end of the house. 

	I came back half an hour later. Screen "saved" itself alright, it was blank, but there was a pitiful high pitched noise coming out of it. That's all she wrote, that screen never did anything except make said pitiful noise from that point on. It was a write-off.

	I use to think this sort of story was bullshit too. It ain't, it happens.
