My original IBM PC had both a monochrome monitor and a CGA monitor hooked up
(ooh, aah, high-tech), and when we needed some work on it (something really
simple, like upgrading the BIOS, but this was back when I knew next to nothing
about the system), we took it to our local Computerland. When they returned
the system, they had set the DIP Switches to boot on the color monitor, which
was warned against in the Guide to Operations in big bold letters, but I didn't
know that, and of course Computerland didn't.

The system booted normally, but the monochrome card never got its signals
straight, and after about three minutes, there was a single flash from the
monochrome monitor, after which it was completely dead. We sent it to
Computerland (our second mistake), and eventually got them to pay for the
repairs.

But it *can* happen.
