You'll kick yourself for this, it's so obvious.  Remember, Z is the
end of the alphabet?  It's intended to be _obviously_ mnemonic, as
in the phrase "alpha omega", meaning from the beginning to the end.

Only a little;  I should have something in my old TOPS-10 system
reference manuals - as I recall, it even went into the several
different card punch codes, which are _not_ equivalent to either
ASCII or EBCDIC.
