dan...@milton.acs.washington.edu (Mikel Stromberg) writes: >1] The dating of the western calendar begins with zero as the year >A.D., which stands for Ammnio Dommini, or After God. Jesus Christ was >born sometime around 35B.C. (Which doesn't mean 'Before Christ' but I >have forgotten the latin words). The end of the 20th century will be A.D. = Anno Domini= "in the year of our Lord" B.C. = before Christ. Both of these can checked by referring to any medium sized dictionary. Note also that proper usage is "A.D. 1989" not "1989 A.D." Christ was note born in 35 BC, since if the accounts in the Bible can be trusted at all, he was Born durinmg the time that Herod the Great was the Roman governor of Judea. This covers the period 37 BC thru 4 BC. The Brittanica states that Christ was born a "few years" before the end of Herod the Great's reign. Another checkpoint is that Pontius Pilate was procurator from AD 26 to AD 37.
