Kochana Rodzino, Przyjaciele i Rodacy,
Jest taka sprawa. Jakis facio z Yale opublikowal na Internecie liste
zatytulowana "The Canonical List of Polish Jokes". Troche mnie to
zdenerwowalo wiec skontaktowale sie z nim (zostawil e-mail w
opublikowanym
oficjalami z Yale. Tez bez wiekszych rezultatow. A wiez zaczolem
dzwonic
po polskich ambasadach, konsulatach, organizacjach zeby wszyscy
zaczeli
dzwonic, i dzwonia, i pisza. I wlasnie dlatego pisze do was tez.
Jesli
wedlog was sprawa ta smierdzi to macie okazje zaprotestowac. Z
w
NetSearch funkcji Netscape i zaraz wykoczy ten posting. Dokladne
dane to:

Rozsylajcie te wiadomosc do kogo tylko mozna aby akcja sie roztaczala
coraz
dalej. Ja nawet jestem w kontakcie z reporterem z The Boston Globe
ktory
moze cos na ten temat napisze bo juz poprzednio udokumentowal podobna
sprawe na Cornell University (lista anty-kobiecych dowcipow, patrzcie
nizej, The Boston Globe, 11/10/95, str. 25). Do niego tez mozecie
pisac:

List do Prezydenta
Mr. Richard Levin
President
Office of The President, Yale University

Phone: 203-432-2550

Dear Mr. Levin,
I'd like to take this opportunity to bring to your attention an
unfortunate
ethnic incident that involves both a Yale student and the Yale
facility.
Mr. Mark Lindner, an undergraduate Computer Science student at Yale,
has
decided to use Yale's computer network to publicly post on the
Internet a
list of ethnic jokes specifically targeting people of Polish decent.
As
you know, a public Internet posting involves entry of a key word
which
allows anyone to search Internet resources by a subject. In this
case any
user interested in researching issues relating to the "polish" is
automatically presented with Mr. Lindner's posting (just as I was
when
using Netscape search engine) under the title of "The Canonical List
of
Polish Jokes".
Naturally, I felt compelled to react since such public display of
ambivalence only perpetuates highly degrading and demeaning ethnic
stereotypes in the society in general. It also underlines an
incredible
lack of sensitivity and unfortunate tolerance for derogatory behavior
along
the lines that: "there's nothing wrong with it because everybody
knows that
Poles are stupid." Without going into the details of the "who did
what and
when" let me make a few specific points which I believe are
fundamental to
resolving this issue to everybody's satisfaction:
1. The issue is not censorship of the Internet. Internet must
remain open
to the free expression of ideas and opinions. The issue is in taking
a
stance on any public attack that targets specific ethnic, cultural,
religious or otherwise identifiable segments of the society. Public
display of bigotry and ethnic insensitivity demands a swift and
unequivocal
response from society in general and those affected in particular.
After
all, freedom of speech and democracy are based on active involvement
of the
individuals on all sides of the issue.
2. I'm not the only person that finds such public display of
arrogance
towards Polish people unacceptable. Over the past two weeks Mr.
Lindner
was flooded with "flame" e-mail from all over the States and Europe
to a
point of having to take special precautions regarding his account. I
believe that Mr. Thomas Conroy, Deputy Director of Public Relations
at
Yale, received many similar protests. The issue is not if I or
anybody
else is personally offended. The issue is how can such blatant
public
ignorance go on without a strong reaction against it.
3. There is no question of the involvement and intentions of Mr.
Lindner.
His actions specifically single out the Polish population; he is
doing it
on a public forum; and he publicly declares "ownership" of the list
in the
list itself ("Compiled by Mark M. Lindner"), and in his Internet home
page
("In fact, I'm the official maintainer of the Canonical List of
Polish
Jokes on the rec.humor.") In addition, upon contacting Mr. Lindner
directly through e-mail regarding this issue, I was presented with a
rather
direct and blunt response, and I quote: "... Finally, I'd like to
let you
know that I'm going to add your name and e-mail address to my
canonical
list, because you're Polish, and you're a joke." And sure enough, my
name
became immortalized as joke #101 on the very next day (a copy of the
joke
page and the entire text of the e-mail is enclosed for your
reference.)
4. Although some of the jokes are clearly lighthearted and funny,
many are
down right vulgar and highly offensive. For example:
- #5 Q: Why don't Polish woman use vibrators? A: It chips their
teeth.
- #147 Q: Why don't Polish woman breast-feed their babies? A: It
hurts too
much when they boil the nipples.
Pretty sad overall, wouldn't you agree?
5. There is no question that Yale is involved. Mr. Lindner
published his
list as a Yale student using Yale facilities. The recent events at
Cornell
(involving a list of sexist jokes) have shown that an university
can't
distant itself from the actions of their students in such situations
(details enclosed for your reference.)
In light of all of the above, I respectfully request an official
response
from Yale's administration regarding this unfortunate event.
Specifically,
I would like to suggest the following actions:
- Clearly articulate and communicate Yale's position regarding this
incident. A documented position from an institution of Yale's
stature will
be much more effective for Internet community than any misguided
attempts
at defining and regulating hate speech through laws and regulations.
- Help Mr. Lindner to understand the difference between sharing jokes
among
friends versus blatant, public, and in-your-face type of
advertisement of
derogatory and demeaning ethnic slurs. In cases like this education
is
superior to any form of punishment.
There is much good that we can derive from this incident to improve
ethnic
sensitivity in the American society. All we need to do is to raise
above
emotions, focus on the fundamental issues and do the right thing for
Mr.
Lindner, Yale University and the Internet community. Would you
please
help?
Lastly, I'm taking the liberty of circulating this letter among the
Internet community as a means of support and encouragement to those
that
decided to make similar protests on their own.
Sincerely,
Pawel Z. Chadzynski
