Skrypt /var/www/phpinfo.php o treści:

<?php
phpinfo();
?>

działa mi poprawnie, natomiast skrypt /var/www/test_xdebug.php o treści:

<?php
echo 0;
?>

wyświetla mi pustą stronę po dłuższym oczekiwaniu.
Po restartcie Apache to samo. 
Ponadto w katalogu /var/log nie mam logu Apache'a.
Używam PHP Version 5.3.10-1ubuntu3.15, Apache Version Apache/2.2.22 (Ubuntu), Apache API Version 20051115

Sprawdź w konfiguracji apache gdzie składuje logi, ewentualnie możesz 
spróbować odgadnąć ich pozycje za pomocą:

lsof -n | grep error_log
lsof -n | grep access_log
