 I want to use exceed to work  here at home on a university server at my
university. The unix over there has got xterm / openwin
now it gives me, can't open display

What did i do wrong?

try seting the DISPLAY env. variable 

btw. you ought to write in Polish in pl.* newsgroups ;->

Apart of display variable, I belive you may have problems with your link
capacity. XWindows session can be really consuming as it sends lots of
graphics via your link (is it modem ??). Perhaps you should just stay with
telnet.

Ps. If you are not happy with screen size in telnet session, there should be
some parameters with application to change it.
