A hasła masz szyfrowane... czym? Jak crypt, to tylko 8 znaków jest brane pod
uwagę. Z man passwd:

     Passwords must be constructed to meet the following require-
     ments:

       o  Each password must have  PASSLENGTH  characters,  where
          PASSLENGTH is defined in /etc/default/passwd and is set
          to 6. Setting PASSLENGTH to more than eight  characters
          requires  configuring  policy.conf(4) with an algorithm
          that supports greater than eight characters.

Obstawiam, że Twoje /etc/security/policy.conf zawiera coś takiego:

# The Solaris default is the traditional UNIX algorithm.  This is not
# listed in crypt.conf(4) since it is internal to libc.  The reserved
# name __unix__ is used to refer to it.
#
CRYPT_DEFAULT=__unix__

a jeśli zmienisz to na 
CRYPT_DEFAULT=1
to zaczniesz używać MD5 i wtedy całe hasło powinno być uwzględniane.
