Firstly, DON'T do this in the GUI, Win95 may have hissy fits about registered applications etc. Secondly, DON'T do it in DOS, as DOS won't track the LFN, i.e the LFN may no longer be associated correctly. Thirdly, before trying this in exclusive DOS mode, test it first by creating a directory NOT in C:\ called "Program Files", retracing your steps to re-create the problem, then rename the 8.3 under your final "Program Files" from PROGRA~2 to PROGRA~1, and see if it is still accessable as "Program Files" in the GUI. If so, may be safe to proceed. >> OK, now what are you going to do with all the registry and parameter file >> entries, and the shortcut files that point to progra~2? RegEdit, Find "PROGRA~2", edit to "PROGRA~1". Similar in afflicted sortcuts. Similar in any 16-bit Windows app .ini files, or other refs. May be do-able, but may never regain 100% confidence. If it was a new system I was setting up for someone else, I'd bite the bullet and start over; if it was my own production machine (gnarled and callussed as it is from years of hard work) I'd hack it - but log every step of the way (ballpoint and paper log)
