Czemu zastosowałeś taki łamaniec zamiast użyć zakresu znaków [abc...]?

Bo podejrzewam, że chcesz uzyskać coś takiego:
preg_replace('/([*.|+icotamjeszcze])\\1+/', '$1', $str);
