bez pętli chyba nie da rady ale jest łatwe:

function countNewLines(str){
	var count = 0;
	var lastIndex = 0;
	while ((lastIndex = str.indexOf('\n', lastIndex)) != -1){
		lastIndex ++;
		count ++;
	}
	return count;
}
