Why can't You preview your Web site with Microsoft
Explorer 3.02?

Version 4.79.1516 of the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine,
installed with Microsoft Explorer 3.02, made it incompatible
with previewing Web sites created with Java. This
bug only affects previewing sites locally. Browsers do not
encounter the error when viewing the site on a Web server. 

This is how Microsoft explains the problem: 

     The security update in build 1516 was too restrictive in
     that applets could not be run from the local file system.  

Since then Microsoft has released two versions of the Java
Virtual Machine that allow your we page previews to continue
working while still addressing the security issues that version
1516 was designed to correct. The latest of these two
versions is Microsoft Java Virtual Machine 4.79.1518. 

        How do I verify my version of the Microsoft Java
     Virtual Machine? 

     The version with the fix is 4.79.1517 or 4.79.1518. The
     version with the error is 4.79.1516 

     To check what version of VM you are using, you should
     get file properties for the file
     C:\Windows\Java\Classes\classr.exe on Windows 95
     or the file C:\WINNT\Java\Classes\classr.exe on
     Windows NT 4.0.

     Easy Steps: For Windows 95 & NT users:

       1.Open your Hard Drive. 
       2.Windows 95 users, open your Windows directory.
          NT 4.0 users, open your WINNT directory. 
       3.Open the folder named Java. 
       4.Open the folder named Classes. 
       5.Right-click the file named 'Classr.exe'. 
       6.Choose Properties. 
       7.Click the Tab named Version. 
       8.Read the File Version. 
          The version with the fix will read 4.79.1517 or
          4.79.1518. 

        How do I update to the latest version of the
     Microsoft Java Virtual Machine? 

     You do not have to re-install Internet Explorer 3.02 to
     fix this problem. Only the Java Classes have changed.

        To update:

       1.Using Internet Explorer 3.02 browse to this page:
          http://www.microsoft.com/java/download.htm 
       2.Click the Microsoft virtual machine for Java link
          near the bottom of the page. 
       3.This page contains information about the new
          version of the Java VM. At the bottom of the page
          click the I Accept link to agree to the license
          agreement. 
       4.On the next page, click Build 1518 for
          Windows95/NT (x86). 
       5.On this page (it may take a few seconds to load)
          you will be asked, "Do you wish to install and Run
          Microsoft Win32® Virtual Machine for Java?"
          Click "Yes". 

          The new version will be downloaded to your
          machine and installed in the correct location. You
          must restart your machine for the changes to take
          effect.
