Record z polem autonumber - jak go przeczytać?

Mam record którego jedno z pól jest typu autonumber. Dodaje nowy record i
próbuję sprawdzić jaki też numer został przyporządkowany pierwszemu pole
(typu autonumber właśnie).
Bezskutecznie! Próba czytania zwraca wartość null.

Eg.

rec.AddNew
rec!SecondField="data1"
rec!ThirdField="data2"
rec.rec.UpdateBatch
debug.print rec!FirstField    - returns null
debug.print rec!SecondField    - returns data1
debug.print rec!ThirdField    - returns data2

(program w VB 6.0 , recordset ADODB with events - jeśli ma to jakieś
znaczenie)
