Ups, pośpieszyłem się za bardzo i zgubiłem nazwę modyfikowanego pola, winno 
być:

dbs.Execute "Alter Table NazwaModyfikowanejTabeli " & _
    "Alter Column NazwaModyfikowanejKolumny Varchar(100)"

Zamiast Varchar możesz użyć Char.
