Hi. I've been playin UW for about two weeks, and have worked my way down to
level 3. From reading posts on the net it seems I've missed a few things on
the uppper levels. My question: Is it absolutely necessary to find every
single door and solve ever dispute between the denizens of the abyss to win the
game? Or can I just keep plowing my way through and go back for anything I
missed later. For instance, the prisoner that is mute but understands Lizard
talk. I tried and tried to figure out what the guard wants, but finally got
P.O.'d and just left him there. Am I screwed?

But sometimes you need items some levels further down. Or sometimes, you get a hint in a low level that there is an item some levels above, then you have to go up again. >talk. I tried and tried to figure out what the guard wants, but finally got >P.O.'d and just left him there. Am I screwed? Well, you said, you found out, that the mage knows Lizard. And you don't understand what the Lizard-Guard wants. So why don't you ask the mage, what the Lizard says? Give it a try. It is nice to speak to them.
