Can't Run Keen4 on 286, EGA

I am having trouble running Keen4 on my 286. My setup is a 286-12Mhz with
1 Mb memory, EGA monitor with ATI EGA card with 256 kb ram.

When I move Keen horizontally, the screen shakes severely. It seems that the
program can't update the screen fast enough when Keen is moving horizontally.
But there is no problem when Keen is moving vertically.

Another strange thing is that in the opening screen, it says that it finds
about 340 kb of standard memory. But I've loaded Dos 5 high and when I
run mem at the dos prompt, it says that I have 583 kb available. Is there
something screwy going on here?

BTW, Keen4CGA runs fine on my computer. But I'd rather have more colors!

Thanks for any replies.

Err...this is not a reply to the above problem. Rather a new one. Probably
a trival one to *real* computer buffs out there.

I got this mega255.zip from wuarchive, out of curiosity following several
previous news posted on it. After unzipping it with pkunzip, and running
mega.exe, the thingy tells me that my computer is not an AT and it needs a
286 (at least) to run. My computer is 386!! What seems to be the problem!!

Help!!

Thanks in advance to any kind and merciful people out there. :-)

Yours sincerely,

I get this problem too - I have an identical setup. I thought that the
Keen programmers just weren't too clever about horizontal scroll, but
you're right - the CPU probably can't keep up.

Vertical scrolling is really really easy because of the way EGA cards
are built, so it's no surprise it works smoothly. Look how many EGA
games scroll vertically instead of horizontally (say, Ballistix by
Psygnosis).

The game still rocks, and you get used to the bad scroll. At least
you can play it, unlike Ultima Underworld, Ultima 7, Wolf 3d, etc..

I think it's reporting the amount of memory left after it has loaded
itself. This thing is a memory hog!
