Halo newbie: follow the leader?

Um, okay, after much hype about Halo, I finally downloaded the demo (the one
with the silent cartographer), and after getting use to the controls,
especially the warthog, I keep coming up on the same problem:

How do I get the solders to follow me?

They are reasonably good at shooting attackers (altho I wish I could point
out when I see attackers that the gunner and sideseat soldier don't see),
but when I get out of the warthog, they either stand around or wander off. I
had to go into that path by myself and take out a whole squad of enemy
aliens and uphill and down to take out two more squads and finally thru two
more squads before I got to some kind of mountain base (okay, I have it on
"easy" setting).

But that's when there was some kind of weird music and I figured I'd need
backup. So I went all the way back and got the warthog and barely scraped it
thru the narrow passes back up to the mountain base and down into it--only
to get stuck by those purple boxes in the way. I replaced the gunner (who
doesn't wander far) and shot up the boxes but nothing. Those things are
impervious. If I can't get the soldiers to follow me, is there anyway
another way the warthog can get in, or do I have to go solo?

You don't. They will join you in a vehicle, but you have no control
over them. The game is designed to be solo play with occasional bits
with soldiers helping you.
