What games have DVD-style extras? Have game publishers started selling ad space
on their DVD-ROMs to other publishers? Have games on one console had demos for
games on competing consoles?

I can't think of many games that do, I know rogue leader for GCN has voice
and video commentary though.

Not yet thank god, man that's scary, imagine a day when you turn on your
system, and have to wait for a comercial to end before you get to play your
game.

No, that would be stupid, especially if the demo is playable, to port the
physics and other things to make a demo work to the console, you may as
well port the whole game. Also developers need licenses, and I don't think
that Sony, Nintendo or MS would allow them to advertise for a competitor on
their systems.

The only game I can think of that has what you're thinking of is SSX Tricky
(for PS2), which includes some interviews and videos.

I certainly wouldn't mind having demos made available on the DVD for other
games (some games already include a separate demo disc) that would be
accessible either through the game's main menu ("Extras"). I doubt that
most of the games coming on DVD really need the whole DVD.

Anyways, the included demos were always for games from the same publisher
for the same platform - for instance 'Zone Of Enders' included a demo disc
for 'Metal Gear Solid 2', which lead to jokes that ZOE would be a big seller
but only because of the demo...

A bunch of XBOX games have demos of other games on them. This seems to be
the norm for Microsoft games. It's a nice, obvious idea.

Rogue Leader for GameCube has some DVD-like "extras" like directory
commentary, making-of videos, etc.

I don't think it's technically feasible to make a dual-format disc that
would play in more than one console, but I wouldn't be surprised if some
multi-platform publisher like Acclaim, Midway, or EA put a game movie on a
DVD with a tag saying that it's available for more than one console.

I guess you could consider stuff like Dragon's Lair multi-console
compatible, but remember you're just playing with the DVD remote ...

Airblade for PlayStation 2 also has some extra "DVD-style" features. One
that stands out in my mind was a rather interesting "Making of" featurette,
similar to what you find on many DVD movies.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 for PlayStation 2 includes a playable demo of Shaun
Palmer's Pro Snowboarder.

Some of the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon games for the PlayStation
had crossover demos (meaning that the Crash game had a demo for a Spyro game
that was released about the same time, and vice versa). These games were on
CD, so you don't need a DVD to do this stuff!

I hope this becomes common.

For maximum exposure, they should put demos on the same disc as the game is on.
Otherwise, players will just throw away the demo.

I also hope they don't force us through ads, but I do hope that they make
playable and watchable demos available as an option on the main menu. Imagine,
ads that are both optional and appealing!

Probably a bit TOO optimistic.

Well over in the UK HALO has that.
We got video of lots of games on the HALO DVD that is slectable from the
main menu.
Like i can watch videos of PGR and i think Amped and that raly game but im
sure they are all microsoft games. They are also all video BUT they do all
seem to say video only not playable demo. So if they seem to point out its
not playable then maybe in a while we might get both video and playable
demos from the main Screen!!!

You know that reminded of a few games for the Amiga and ST that were on
the same disk. The game would boot on whichever machine it was put in.
I always thought that was rather neat.

Myth II for Mac and Windows did that.

There have been a fair number of Mac/PC hybrid CDs: Blizzard's Warcraft
stuff is virtually all hybrids.

Mac users keep track of this because often you can find a deal on a
hybrid CD that's branded or sold only as a PC disc by the store, and
because you can get these discs at more places than you can find
Mac-only CDs.

It's also nice to get the hybrid version of a game for the PC bargin
price instead of the full priced "Macintosh Version". I did that with
Diablo. :)
