I thought I'd post some 'speed ratings' of recent games, something lacking in mainstream reviews. An explanation of the rating system: All pseudo-benchmarks are done on an Athlon 700 with a GeForce2 MX running the latest drivers. Game settings are left at their default values. 5: Perfect A rating of 5 is given to games which never, ever (not even in the menus) drop below the refresh rate of the monitor on mid-range hardware, even if the refresh rate is 120 Hz. 4: Almost Perfect A rating of 4 is given to games where the framerate stays at the monitor's refresh at least 95% of the time. The game might slow down when the action gets uncommonly frenetic. 3: Inefficient but consistent A rating of 3 is given to games which can run at the monitors refresh at least 50% of the time. The framerate will never be less than half the refresh rate. 2: Artificially Slow A rating of 2 is given to games which have a fps cap below the monitor's refresh that cannot be bypassed. Many PlayStation ports are done this way because the developers were too lazy to write framerate independent code. 1: Jerkishly Evil A rating of 1 is given to games with abnormal jerks or pauses that occur in the middle of gameplay, or if the framerate ever drops below 20 fps. And now for some ratings: Alice Demo Speed Rating: 4 Deus Ex Speed Rating: 3 Frogger 2 Speed Rating: 4 Half Life Speed Rating: 5 Mercedes-Benz Truck Racing Demo Speed Rating: 3 NHL 2001 Demo Speed Rating: 3 Quake III Arena Speed Rating: 4 Quake III Team Arena Speed Rating: 4 Sacrifice Demo Speed Rating: 1 Star Trek Elite Form HM Demo Speed Rating: 4 Tony Hawk Pro Skater DEMO Speed Rating: 5 Tony Hawk Pro Skater Full Version Speed Rating: 2 Unreal Tournament Speed Rating: 4
