Ultima 7 Bugs

I plan on buying Ultima VI sometime in the next few days (as my reward
for surviving finals with the shattered remnants of my sanity intact.)
I've seen a lot of bug reports over this newsgroup and rec.games.misc,
some with workarounds. Does someone have or can someone compile a list
of these bugs and what to do to avoid/neutralize them? I'm sure it will
be of use to a lot of people. (I got hosed enough in U5 and U6 by bugs
that I really don't want to deal any more.)

I apologize for this breach of netiquette (Is it in fact a breach?) but
could any responses after Friday please also be emailed to me? I'll be
going home and won't be able to read news except by long-distance phone
call. I will have email at work though (forwarded from MIT). I'd really
appreciate it.

Thanks very much,
Scott Kullberg

May I have a copy too, please (pn...@ee.ubc.ca). Also, one word of warning,
Don't buy U7 if you have 386sx-16, you'll be an old man before you ever get
out of Trinsic. It was a bad joke on Origin's part to say that this
configuration is acceptable.

Well I went and bought the game today. I haven't gotten anywhere at all
since it doesn't work though. After no more than about one or two
minutes, it locks up. (Earlier if I enter/leave a building, but it will
just quit when it's time no matter what I do.) It also locks when
closing the saved-game menu. It seems to leave the cursor active (I can
still move it) most of the time (70%) when it dies. Other times the
screen goes half red and the rest scrambled, or all scrambled. Once I
got a code to call the customer disservice people with. Often, if the
cursor is active, I can get some sort of "location" coordinates in the
upper left.

I'm running a 386/33, 8mb ram, SCSI hard drive, VGA (don't remember the
type, it's fairly generic with added 640x400x256 mode), Sound Blaster (I
think it's 1.5), 4mb free on the logical drive where U7 is, DOS 5. I
tried just about every possible permutation of 4Dos, HIMEM, uSoft Mouse
6.11 (this may be the problem, the game says it wants >7.00, Smartdrive,
and the CMOS setup's caching, both from a boot disk and not. Nothing
seems to work.

Has someone else out there had this problem? This is really annoying,
and I need to find out Real Soon Now if my PC won't run it so I can
return it before I have to go home (Saturday). I'll be calling Customer
Disservice today; if they give me any generally relevant information
I'll post it.
