Sierra Vs. Lucasfilm Interface survey results

A while back I solicited opinions from people on what they thought was a
better interface for adventure (or interactive fiction) games. The two
interfaces I concentrated on were the Sierra "iconic" interface used in
games such as KQ5, Leisure Suit Larry 5, Robin Hood, etc. and Lucasgames'
interface used in Indy Jones and Monkey Island. Overwhelmingly, people
preferred Lucasfilm's interface to Sierra's interface. About 95% responded
Lucas and 5% responded Sierra. Among reasons were:
o Lucas was much more flexible, allowed more choices to be made,
Sierra too easy, made guessing easy, "click anything on screen"
o Liked Lucasfilm's "intelligent" verb choosing feature. This is when
you click on a door and the verb "open" (or close) appears.
o Some people didn't like having to move the mouse to the top of the
screen in Sierra's interface to bring up the icon bar.
o Some preferred the crosshair cursor over the arrow cursor
Thanks to everyone again who responded to the survey. Most of those who
responded have been gaming for quite a number of years (most over 6-7 years).
                            - Eric
