O.k., first, the *** SPOILER *** stuff. Don't read further if you want Wolf 3D to remain a challenge for you. O.k., now for some simple stuff. Sorry about the extra linefeeds, that's for the benefit of those using newsreaders that don't recognize ^L's. In "Death Incarnate" mode, some soldiers come after you, while some remain hidden. All guards/SS/dogs have "trigger conditions," that is some program event that will make them fight. About 50% of the guards are triggered by opening a door to the room they're in. Others are "provoked" by floor triggers. If you're in to the techie stuff and have played with some of the map decoders/ editors now in circulation, you will notice that the hex code for the plain floor is different than the code for a floor "trigger position." In terms of actual play, you can pull these guards out of hiding in virtually all cases by moving fast into a room and then out. In some of the most loaded rooms (e.g. Level 6) you may take a hit or two, but with both hits from SS that's a worst- case health loss of 30-40%. Assuming you've secured a fully automatic machine gun, you can then spray your crowd as they come after you. Using this (quickly boring) technique, I made it through the entire game in "Death Incarnate" on a single life-time. That's it for the spoiler. Two comments about the game: 1) The reason distribution is banned/restricted in Germany should be obvious to anyone who's played the game. Nazi or no, THE OBJECT OF THE GAME IS TO KILL TONS OF GERMANS!!!! It may be a game to us as Americans, since we were on the alleged "good side" of the war. I have no love for the Third Reich, mind you, I just don't believe there's a "good guy" in any war, especially one in which millions of soldiers and civilians were killed on either side. For those of you who don't read the papers, it may be enlightening to learn that George Bush was found guilty of over a dozen counts of war crimes in connection with the intervention in Kuwait/Iraq. This same court oversaw the prosecution of Nazi was criminals in Nuremberg. The other aspect of the German restriction (and another reason why we should all respect it) is that the German nation & people have a huge chip on their shoulder regarding this dark episode of their history. To aggravate the problem, there is in Germany (as there is elsewhere in Europe) a number of youth gangs who, for reasons ranging from shock value to pathological identification, openly display pride and fealty to Nazi values and politics (although most of them just wear swastikas and don't understand half of Mein Kampf, since full understanding requires post- graduate training in psychology). I suspect Germany (read: its government) does not want to introduce any more paraphenalia (especially software which is free and easily copied) that will further excite the twisted, bored adolescent minds who have gobbled up Nazism as a fashion statement. On a lighter note, comment re: the game itself: I have been playing with WMAP.C and am, like others, trying to come up with a neat interface for editing the maps to make things more interesting. However, I no longer enjoy shooting Nazis (who are still, symbolically, people, even if they are bitmapped). I would be interested in info concerning the layouts of the bitmaps and texture maps so that I could replace those as well as the mazes. At that point, we're left with a game engine which is still inherently shoot-em-up, but I could, e.g., make a Dadaist version where you were chased by tables and pillars. I think I could really enjoy that game. Has anyone tinkered with these other files (i.e. other than MAPTEMP.WL1)? Send me e-mail. Finally, see my other posting for the HARDEST way to play Wolf3d.
