In article <5cbsfm$7...@sue.cc.uregina.ca>, smi...@hercules.cs.uregina.ca says... > If Microsoft ends up winning the browser war, it's because Netscape > couldn't play the game as well as it thought it could. Beg to disagree... Netscape is a company that's brought the browser into the age of having useful utilities, and added components. It's always sold it's browser, and played by the rules of the market sector. Microsoft, however has the advantage in that it 'dumps' it's explorer product with new OS such as win '95 and NT4, which has them come along with the install CD. It also charges nothing, as it can underwrite the cost of development against it's other business interests. Netscape, being a business based around it's browser is not so capable of throwing the market rulebook away. It's like the difference between going out to buy a Pentium Pro PC, that does everything you want, and is stable, and spend about 1.5k, or have someone deliver a 486DX4100 to your doorstep, install it and charge you nothing at all, even tho the machine falls over about once a week. Most people out there who don't know any different opt for the latter... They simply don't care about extra reliability (they just complain later about it, and keep on using it), and don't have as much incentive to get the good solution, as they can now limp by... I don't disagree with MS on the principle that it's getting huge, I only disagree with it on the grounds that they ought to be building REALLY GOOD and ground breaking software with their staggering budget, rather than trying to catch up with older technologies developed by others years ago, and always being behind. I'll actually admit to liking NT as an OS, but I still use LINUX by preference whenever I can... I recently showed a set of tools provided free with LINUX install disks to a true NT affictionado, and what LINUX could really do unleashed... He almost immediately changed his mind about hating UNIX, and gave it some serious thought... It must have been a surprise for the guy to see something new... Rich James The thoughts above are entirely my own, and do not in any way reflect the opinions of my employers.
