In the early 1980s the VCR market was driven by the rental companies who, naturally, went for the cheapest option and so VHS machines predominated. I bought a Sony Betamax SLC7-UB in 1982 on merit and it is still going strong, with a superb picture and is incredibly easy to program. Sony still service them in this country and manufacture a number of Betamax models to sell to the more discerning world outside. -- Malcolm Muir
