I think of several reasons why this anonymous site had to shut down.
1) Class III Internet Users (These are the jokers who do nothing but sit at
a terminal all day and post nothing but crap on the net, wasting bandwidth)
2) Insecure people who would be embarrassed to post to a certain group
3) Anonymous flamers (a subset of the Class III internet user, most of the time
residing in talk.politics.* groups, but can be in other
groups as well)
4) This reason may not be a good one, but I sense a great deal of hostility on
the net when something good on the net has to go down because of immature
users.
Let me conclude with the three classes of Internet users:
Class I : Someone unfamiliar with the internet and needs a lot of help to
understand it.
Nickname : newbie, new users, etc.
Class II: Uses the internet to gain information, software, and other services
to further his/her knowledge.
Nickname : power user, jockey, and other names as necessary
Class III: Addicted to the Internet in a big, big way. Includes flamers,
people who post the same stuff over and over and over again,
people who post on the sci-fi newsgroups (not a flame on sci-fi,
but if you added the articles in the sf* groups would be at
least 20-30K messages). This also includes those who play on
muds incessantly, which is enough to slow down the throughput
at some sites.
Nickname : flamers (of all shapes and forms), fanatics, and
ESPECIALLY the net-censors in the groups, politics
groups primarily.
Addendum to Class III classification:
I feel that the typical net user is a Class II user who doesn't spend that
much time on the Internet, or a brand new user who has most of the ways
of the Internet down. I don't mean to hurt anybody, but to just to give
my observations of what is going on the net.
You know what really tick me off though is the people who get on the net
and post trash about this, that, and the other, and over time, that is
wasting bandwidth (like a 10,000 word summary of the Secretary of State's
schedule for that day every frigging day). I don't want to start a witch
hunt, nor do I condone that type of action. All I'm saying is to think
before you post. I don't care how you post, but post wisely. People who
use an anonymous site to post articles without adhereing to the 'think
before you post' idea cause the service to shut down.
