My Two Cents on Civ

Disclaimer: These are the opinions of a friend of Michael's.

My credentials first: I have won civilization on Emperor level in the year
1834, by reaching alpha centauri first. I have been playing for about one
month.

My advice: These are tips only, not an overall strategy (that would take
an encyclopedia, and you really should develop your own.)

First, contrary
to previous posts, barracks are very important if you want to WIN your wars,
and almost all games involve two or more wars.

Second, Treasury? who needs
a treasury? I put ALL my resources into science, as it is vital to keep up
in science, particularly on the higher levels.a

Third, bombers are useful, as
they can be researched sooner than artillery, and they ignore city
walls. To get more use from them, park an aircraft carrier immediately next
to coastal enemy cities, and the bombers can then attack every turn, instead
of every other.

Fourth, nukes. I try to avoid using them if possible, but a
nuke at the right time can change the course of a civilization. By nuking and
then capturing the capital of the leading enemy civ while it was in anarchy
(form of government), the enemy civ was split into two civs, a rebel and a
loyal faction (half the cities changed to a new color!) Also, has anyone ever
seen the computer start a nuclear war? I haven't. They bluff a lot.

Fifth, wonders worth building. The pyramids are priceless, and switching gov
types back and forth is very useful, particulary ones you have not achieved
yet. Note: communism is better than monarchy, as corruption is lessened.
J. S. Bach's cathedral is valuable to keep people content, and never becomes
obsolete. Darwin's Voyage is well worth the cost as you get two free civ
advances, plus you keep the research you have already put into the advance you
were working on. Thru this, I have gotten three advances in one turn. Also,
Women's suffrage is useful for fighting wars. (obviously.)

One last point: On Emperor level, just stay close, and then pounce on the first
mistake the enemy makes. From a bad city site start, I have won on Emperor
after trailing the entire game.

Good Luck, and maybe your name will be written in the annals of CIVILIZATION!
                                                        Eric
