According to my entirely unsubstantiated hunch, the issue
isn't really how much money they would make, but the removal
of a serious threat. Sony's not just trying to shut out
Microsoft from their console, they're trying to actually
replace the PC with it! Not only that, but the PS2 development
systems are based on Linux, a boost for a growing OS threat
to Microsoft's Win32 OS's.

But what if Sony licensed WinCE like Sega did and didn't use
a Linux based development system? In that case, even if the
PS2 replaced the PC, Microsoft would still be making money
off of it, and probably be the premier developer of non-entertainment
software for it.

Like I said, though, it's just a hunch.
