Greetings! I had the sheer unmitigated temerity to ask Serpent Isle
to run on a mere AT with 2 megs of memory -- it complained. I'm
running Dos 6, clean, no doublespace or anything; no matter what I try
to do, I can't seem to get all the bytes it wants. (I'm on a vanilla
SB, so have to get 586000 bytes or so...) If I bypass autoexec and
config and load the mouse driver from the command line, I wind up with
enough extended memory but 4500 bytes short on normal; if I load
HIMEM.SYS (and nothing else) in config I get all the ordinary <640K
memory in the world but not enough extended. My question to the world:
how can I free up any more? Is there a mouse driver for a
Microsoft-compatible rodent that'll load in 8K or less? Is there a way
to get HIMEM to provide less than 64K of memory so to kick the
available extended up over 1000K? Am I doomed to spend my head banging
against a wall? Thanks!
ObNonTechnical: My record for beating Ultima VII was 5 minutes or so
-- boot up, teleport to the under-the-mountain armory,
grab the wand and the three gadgets, teleport to the
Isle of the Avatar, plug, zap, and awaaaaay we go!
