I'm trying to solve the "picture puzzle" and it *seems* impossible...

I wrote a simple "simulator" in quick basic below.  It should run under
any version of IBM basic.

20 FOR i = 1 TO 3
30 FOR j = 1 TO 3
40 a(i, j) = 1
50 NEXT j
60 NEXT i
70 a(2, 3) = 2
80 GOSUB 1000
90 GOSUB 2000
100 GOTO 80
999 END

1000 CLS : FOR i = 1 TO 3
1010 FOR j = 1 TO 3
1020 PRINT a(i, j);
1030 NEXT j
1040 PRINT
1050 NEXT i
1060 RETURN

2000 INPUT "Enter ROW to change "; x
2010 INPUT "Enter COL to change "; y
2020 FOR i = 1 TO 3
2030 a(x, i) = a(x, i) + 1
2040 IF a(x, i) > 9 THEN a(x, i) = 1
2050 a(i, y) = a(i, y) + 1
2060 IF a(i, y) > 9 THEN a(i, y) = 1

It doesn't "minus" the picture values, just adds.  It shouldn't make a
difference.  I got to where I have every picture piece to look the same
except one.  How could this puzzle be solved if this is true?  Are 
there any rules I don't take into account?
