Redisplay problem in Wolfenstein 3D

I'm impressed by the smooth animation in this game, but on my machine,
the status part of the screen has black vertical stripes obliterating
about 2/3 of the screen. This makes it hard to see your status, or ammo,
or score. I'm running a 386/20 with a Trident VGA board. Any suggestions?
I know that Commander Keen had a switch to select SuperVGA mode to avoid
some display problems, but I saw no such switches in Wolfenstein. I get
the problem whether I run under DR-DOS 6.0 or MS-DOS 4.0.

I also get the stripes in the initial "how much memory do you have"
screen, with only the words "Press enter" obliterated.

     Any suggestions?
