Following up my post reviewing baseball games: Presently both PtP and SOM are available mail only, although I understand SOM will be available in stores. Here are their addresses: Pursue the Pennant PO Box 19703 Greensboro, NC 27419-9703 (919) 299-4388 (800)-765-4787 (orders) Strat-o-matic Game Co. 46 Railroad Plaza Glen Head, NY 11545 (800) 645-3455 PtP's version 4.0 is supposed to ship first week of June. Mail orders only right now. $74.95 (comes with 1991 disk). $24.95 upgrade price from v3.02 (without 1991 disk). From the advert blurb: The Computer Manager will handle lineups, account for injuries, fatigue, spot players. You can designate a backup for multiple roles like defensive replacement, pinch hitter vs L, utility. You can influence decisions by choosing it to be aggressive or conservative... Autoplay lets you play a game or parts of a schedule. You can play computer vs computer, computer vs player, or player vs player. I've heard that computer games take about 5 seconds on a 486 and a minute on a 386 (what type?). But you can set up a whole schedule of games for it to play, so you can let it run overnight. It can store boxscores and scoresheets. The schedule manager lets you create, view, print and play a schedule. No idea if this means you can let the computer create a schedule or input your, own or both. SOM costs $70.25 with current season disk AND boardgame cards. I think it's $50 or $55 without cards. They still push you to get the cards even though they are no longer necessary in v3 (what a joke). Add $5 shipping. SOM seems to have more past seasons available than PtP, at a cheaper price. Their stat compilation seems more comprehensive, including L/R breakdowns, run support, hitting streaks...You can even just save boxscores from games with major events (3 homers, no-hitter, etc). Someone asked about editor features. With PtP you can create/draft leagues, teams, players (so you can change stats or make new players), ballparks, and eras (so you can make a hitters or pitchers year). The process can be fairly complex. >From the SOM blurb, you can create leagues and ballparks. Release, draft, trade, copy players. Doesn't say anything about whether you can make new ballplayers or change stats. If you can't, I'd consider this a serious drawback. Hope this helps. Geez, these companies should pay me.
