Ok, here's some info:
Are We There Yet (AWTY) is *kinda* like Fools' Errand, but it's much more
like another Cliff Johnson game, "The Puzzle Gallery - At The Carnival,"
which I believe is only available for the Mac (it may not even be available
anymore, not sure).
AWTY has a number of different types of puzzles, all 'connected' by the
theme of a family who won a contest that includes a trip across the US.
Like Fool's Errand, you start with only some puzzles available to you,
and as you solve a puzzle, other puzzles get added to the 'available' list.
Plus, like in FE, there is a puzzle you can't solve until you have solved
all the other puzzles. The puzzles are thematically related to visiting
different states, and to complete a state you have to solve 2 different
kinds of puzzles, each of which may consist of solving 2 puzzles! So
there are LOTS of puzzles (over 200 I believe).
The puzzles consist of a number of types - jigsaw, word search, click on
buttons to create sentences, click on buttons to x-or out a word, etc, etc.
The puzzle types are almost exactly what's available in The Puzzle Gallery,
except they added a few word kinds of puzzles, and a Simon-like game (click
on the buttons in the same pattern as the computer shows you).
AWTY was reviewed in Computer Gaming World a few months ago (December or
January issue, I believe). They liked it a lot.
The game graphics are ok, but not overwhelming, and the music wears thin
quickly for me. If you like puzzles you will like this. How does it
compare to FE? Well, I didn't like the storyline as much, and I think
the puzzles in FE are, if not more difficult, more interesting.
I picked this up for $18 at Egghead, where it was in the bargain bin.
Oh yeah, one of the best puzzles in AWTY I saw is a jigsaw that includes
a goldfish swimming across the screen. The fish swims even when the pieces
are jumbled up, which is quite entertaining!
I played and really liked Fool's Errand (didn't complete it, but came
close). I played and completed The Puzzle Gallery. I played and
almost completed 3 in 3. I played Are We There Yet, but didn't get very
far into it. I think the lack of originality compared to these other
puzzle games may have had something to do with it.
