Actually, its not all that common, but when someone asks us "what's the best
out there", you'll be sure to get some good advice... Anyway... my favs are:

1. Red Baron: Undoubtedly the best flight sim / combat game I've played.
Released last year(?), this WWI air combat simulator pits you against some of
the greatest aces of the war. You can fly in a campaign which spans the
entire war, on either the German or Allied side, which I think makes Red
Baron stand out among the other combat sims. The game runs quite well on my
386/20, and VERY smmothly on my roommate's 386/40. The sound is also very
well done, from the opening title down to the engine and machine gun sounds.
Make sure you get at least an Adlib sound card... Soundblaster if you can,
because this game makes very good use of these accessories.

2. Test Drive 3: Granted that this game is about 2 years old (I think, correct
me if I'm wrong :-), it still ranks as one of the most enjoyable and
exciting driving sims I've ever seen. It comes with 3 exotic cars, and 5
different sections of the route from somehwer in California to Washington
State. (Again, I'm not too sure... I don't use the maps anymore). Anyway,
each section of route has two different paths through it, and a 'secret'
shortcut, which is fun to try and find. Throughout your journey from start
to finish, you have to avoid hitting other cars and getting stopped by 'pigs' while cruising along at speeds over 200 MPH!! Fun! Fun! Fun!

If you like the sound of Red Baron, you might want to wait until Aces Of the
Pacific is released (supposedly it was released today, according to my local
Software Etc... but alas, they don't have it in yet.) Instead of flying in
WWI, the game is set in the Pacific theater of WWII... Over 25 planes are
reported to be included in the game, and you can play the campaign from the
beginning to the end of the war. In addition, Dynamix is planning to release
two add-on scenario disks... One will include Brittish planes in the fury, and
the other will tackle the question of "What if the war hadn't ended in 1945
with the 'bomb'..." I've seen some pretty sharp preview pictures from the game,
and from the reviews I've read, it promises to deliver non-stop action...

I hope this info helps you find some games that deliver what you want... I know
these have for me. =8)
