Any opinions *based*on*actual*games*played out there?

I am not entirely sold on this; I've played GalCiv since the OS/2
version first came out, and I still pull out Twilight of the Arnor from
time to time - it's a great 4x, I love it.

But from what I see in most reviews, GalCiv 3 is more or less same old,
same old, with glitzy graphics and 64bit only support (not a problem for
me) but .... otherwise? Is there any real, compelling innovation that's
worth shelling out $60NZ ??? If so, I haven't seen it mentioned in any
of the reviews.

I'm stuck between "I want a new toy" and "I'll wait until Steam does a
half price weekend special or some such, because there really isn't any
rush to get this".

I am impressed by the roaring silence in this ng - maybe it really is
dead and it's time for me to move on.

Anyway, I have just studied the user reviews on steam for 90 minutes,
and boy, there's way way too much "not recommended" going on, I almost
get the impression that the majority of recent reviewers (or at least
half of them) are NOT at all happy. And that in turn has me wondering
about the gushing 'pro' reviewers.

All of that once again reinforces my thinking that paying lots of money
for 'early access' in order to become an unpaid alpha/beta tester is a
bit of a mug's game (ok, call it a gamble). Glad I resisted. I supported
Wasteland 2 and while it's not a bad game, I only spent less than 1/3
of what I'd have to pay for Galciv3 - and I find that Wasteland doesn't
really manage to capture my imagination. I haven't gone further in it
than the railroad camp and I just lost interest. Too much tedium for the
payback in story. But 15 dollars are a lot easier to write off than 50.

Think I'll not be buying this game for a good long while. After the
initial Fallen Enchantress debacle, and my annoyance that the revised
version was superceded in VERY short order by Legendary Heroes which
really wasn't much more than a fleshing out of content and should've
been offered at a discount for owners of the former .... well. Seems
that we're going to see something like that happening all over here.

What's more galling in a way is that Wasteland2 will have a GotY version
coming out and it will be FREE to previous owners (and I'll give it a
run, trust me). I think I paid at least twice, or maybe even 3 times
full price for Galciv 2, and I paid twice full price for Legendary
Heroes (which IS a top notch fantasy 4x, let's not be coy about that),
but still .... it teaches me one thing: don't get in early on
Stardock games [any more].

Stardock's stellar reputation with me is taking a bit of a turn for
the worse these days. No longer a guaranteed 'must buy'. Is short term
cashflow more important than long term customer confidence and loyalty?
It seems to be the way of many these days. But, yeah, loyalty. poof.

I've only played Galatic Civilization 2 and wasn't very impressed by it.
The AI was pretty dumb and not much of challenge. For that reason alone
I wasn't interested in the sequel, but it doesn't surprise me that it
doesn't inovate much. Brad Wardell is no Sid Meier. Given Stardock's
history, as you noted, it also doesn't seem to be a good idea to be an
early adopter.

Stardock threw their reputation away by coming in on the Gamergate
side, as far as I'm concerned. I am not interested in buying strategy
games from a company that actively avoids making strategy games that would
be of interest to women (or thinks that's what they're doing, anyway).
