Sengoku: worth it? and how do I find out if my graphics card can handle it?

Today GameStop has Sengoku available for half price ($15 CAD), via
Impulse, no DRM. It looks interestingly different from what I already
have in the way of strategy games. I'd appreciate some comments from
people who've tried it to see if they like it.

The trouble is the usual one I have with games: they list one graphics
card, I have another, and I have no idea how to find out whether mine is
adequate. They say NVIDIA® GeForce 8800 or ATI Radeon® X1900; I have
Radeon 3600. My system is old and although I expect to upgrade it
eventually I need to put that off for a little while.

So is my card good enough? And, more generally, is there some website
that tells you "if they say this, and you have that, you can/can't run
the game."

I use the chart at the end of Tom's Hardware's monthly Best Graphics
Cards for the Money article to rank cards by performance:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107-7.html

According the chart your graphics card would be somewhat slower than an
Radeon X1900. That *might* not be too much of a problem in a Paradox
strategy game.

Interesting. Never heard of it. "All the strategic elements of Shogun 2
campaign map" but ramped up to 11. Seems like a good purchase for $15
but I also see it is compared to Europa Universalis.

My 2¢ -- I bought Paradox's Europa Universalis - Rome on an impulse buy
and installed it and looked at the screen and tried to figure out what
to do. So many options and buttons and charts and graphs. I viewed the
tutorials and still had no idea what to do -- they were not very
informative. Others told me that you kinda need to know how to play the
EU game in order to learn how to play the EU - Rome game. This one may
be like that.

Sorry. Not familiar enough with the ATI cards to answer this part.

Assuming you get it and it runs ... review please. :)

Oh, I remember that one, I bought Europa Universalis a long time ago.
Somehow it reminded me of Risk, the boardgame, and like Risk I didn't
like it all that much. You get 3-5 good dice rolls and it starts an
avalanche victory. More technical in EU, but in the end it's not that
different. Thought I'd support a small indie, but the product didn't
really work for me, I consider it money down the toilet. I tried a dozen
times to get into that game (that means a dozen sustained efforts at
different times, not booting it up 12 times) but, well, blah ...

Sengoku may be totally different.

I bought the game and read most of the 88 page manual (all but
"multiplayer"). At first glance it does look very, very complex. I'm
starting on "very easy" with an independent clan leader and hope I get
things somewhat figured out before the first neighbour decides to start
trouble. I'll report back again when I've learned more -- but it looks
like a game will take a long, long time.

Europa Universalis is nothing like that. Luck isn't that big a factor
in ground combat, and doing too well at the start can be very counter
productive as the AI will see you as the biggest threat and gang up
on you. A number of factors limit how fast you can grow, you can't just
steamroll over everyone. It's really a game about managing the ebb and
flow of war, minimizing your losses when the enemy has the advantage,
while not over extending yourself when you do. Being able to deal
efficiently with the constant threat of revolt any is a crucial skill.
You also can easily lose more men to attrition than directly in battle.

EU is superficially like Risk in that has a global scale, area movement,
and stacks of simple units. It plays nothing like it.

>Sengoku may be totally different.

I'm guessing it's pretty much like any Paradox strategy game.

By the way, how well is it performing on your machine? Still playable
despite using a somewhat under spec PC?

All I've done so far, after realizing how long a game was going to take,
was to get started on building up infrastructure using one of the
independent Daimyo -- so I didn't have to worry (yet) about war or
appeasing a master. There's little graphics involved at that point. I
imagine the battles might require more!
