What sort of sadist produces a game that can make you play for hours but
is only likely to last a hour before the first crash!

It's worse than that...

I'm at turn 478. My empire is mere turns away from achieving a science
victory (Alpha Centauri, here I come!). The game crashes consistently
processing the next turn.

I *wish* it had crashed only an hour into the battle. It was fairly
stable before that but now that I've nearly won after investing days
into this campaign... NOW it doesn't let me progress? Argh!!!!

It's still a Civ game, though, so I love it nonetheless.

Now that's a pisser but in true Civ style ... I'll just play until I've
researched compass then I'll go to bed!

Uh-huh. That's just how it starts.

"Well, I researched compass... but if I get gunpowder I'll be well on
the way to ruling the world. It's only a few more turns; I guess I can
go to work a bit tired tomorrow..."

...and then...

"My musketeers are kicking ass! Two more cities and England is
conquered! I won't have gotten any sleep, but it's worth it!"

...and then...

"Damn it England, why didn't you just give up? But no, you had to put
up a fight; now my armies are decimated and France is attacking my
northern frontier! I can't quit now. I'll just call in a sick day."

... and then...

"It's a shame I lost my job, but with a few more turns and I'll finish
up the United Nations wonder; then I can get a diplomatic victory...
if I get Genoa to vote for me."

... so true, so true. When you look at amount of hours played it's
really hard to beat Civ. I'd say a couple of full games is more time
than I've every spent on say CoD 4.
