Have you played Alpha Centauri? If so, how does it compare to Civilization V? Does Civ V contain some Alpha Centauri features?

Alhpa Centauri was a sort-of spin-off based on Civ 2's engine. It takes place once the space ship you launched in Civ 2 to win the game, reaches Alpha Centauri. You could almost think of Civ (any Civ) as a prequel to Alpha Centauri in that regard. If you like Alpha Centauri you'll probably like Civ 5. Civ (all versions) is based on Human history, so it starts around 5000BC, and while there are the ocassional lion or bear to contend with, you don't have mind worms running amok for obvious reasons. You still have to eXplore, eXpand, eXploit and eXterminate (if you choose). There's a tech tree, but it's based on actual discoveries, as opposed to Alpha Centauri's futuristic techs. The same goes with the units you build. Civ 5 retains the culture and religion features from Civ 4, although I've heard that religion is a bit more anonymous in Civ 5. Anyways, culture is generated by cities, which determines your borders and areas of influence on the map. You are still in charge of finding and developing new cities to grow your economic, military and science bases, but also have to contend with culture and religious growth as well. Civ5 does away with the old square grid from Alpha Centauri (and every previous Civ) and introduces hexes. Civ 5 also doesn't allow units to stack, so wars become a bit more strategic. -- It's not broken. It's...advanced.

There is no religion at all, and the the use and impact of culture has completely changed. Culture is almost entirely concerned with earning Social Policies which is the V replacement for Civics; just about the only thing it shares with IV is the name.

Its streamline design shares alot with the console Civilization Revolution. Its still Civ, fun, easier to get into, but not a sequel to Civ IV.

CIV V is slick - very well polished. But it's shallow. Simplified in many respects. It's still enjoyable, but it's definitely geared towards a more casual/console player. I'm pleased with some of the changes, but the game is not a sequel to CIV IV. In fact, I expected to uninstall CIV IV, but I'll be leaving them side by side - I can see myself playing IV when I want a more involved game. Now if only I could get Alpha Centauri to run on Win 7, I'd be playing that too.

Not me, I need to invest in some bigger drives, but until then Civ V is getting uninstalled. I knew I should have listened to my first instinct to not buy it. The hype got me. You would think this was the best Civ ever. It is the most polished and streamline Civ to date and I guess style over substance wins these days.

Dunno about AC on Windows7, but you may wish to try Planetfall, a mod for Civilization IV that aims to recreate that classic on the newer platform. http://www.moddb.com/mods/planetfall I haven't tried it myself but it looks interesting.

There's still a lot of substance, though, don't you agree? Policies, or what's the english name (I play the italian evrsion) are wonderfully organised, I love that sub-policy from the Liberty Policy which makes your new cities start with half the food needed to grow. And the 1-hex 1-unit rule looked a bit shallow but then I realized it's not a bad idea, gives more importance to tactics. And I'm lovin' those state-cities. -- ViLco And the family stone

What is your/the problem?
Just tried it under Win7(32-bit) and got it to work.
I have and installed the 'Planetary Pack' bundle (ol' Big Box).
[Terran.exe] and the DRM binaries are dated (2000-01-24), none of
them describe their version on the properties Details-tab.
[ReadMe.txt](2000-01-29) seems to indicate the Alpha Centauri is
at version 3.0 (and Crossfire at 2.0) as released in this bundle.
My User Account type is 'Administrator'.
Made a Shortcut to [Terran.exe] ;
Shortcut-tab ; Advanced... ;
Run as Administrator
Compatibility-tab ; Change settings for all users ;
Compatibility mode = ?
(Win95 & Win98 -> AppCrash in [Terran.icd])
(Skipped over trying WinNT 4.0 & WinNT 5.00.x)
(Tried next one and it works for me.)
Compatibility mode = WinXP SP2
Disable Visual themes
Disable Desktop composition
Didn't test so i don't know what if anything in the above
settings that might not be needed.
I HopeThisHelps.

Civ V is a great game. I didn't mean to sound so harsh. There are great additions to the Civ franchise in Civ V. Just weighing the additions and omissions, at least after a few weeks play, I think it would be a better product if the omissions weren't taken out. Maybe Civ VI or expansion packs will bring it all back together again.

Rather than go through all of this, try this unofficial patch: http://www.civgaming.net/forums/showthread.php?t=7511 Fixed a lot of bugs and improved compatibility with modern OSes too. - Solomon -- Solomon Peachy pizza at shaftnet dot org Melbourne, FL ^^ (mail/jabber/gtalk) ^^ Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum viditur.

But yes, i'd most probably install any later updates if i'd continue playing, so thank you for the URL. I was just doing a quick and dirty trial-install. I'm testing installing different games as i have a Win7(32-bit)-machine on loan for the moment (Turned out the PSU didn't give what the Graphics card demanded). -- New energy resource found.

Addendum. The bundle is a one CD release. Installer offers three install-types; something like Complete, Custom (or was it typical?) and Minimal. I did chose the 'Complete' option and it installed without any complaint. Yes right, i also forgot to mention that, because i always do (and everyone else also, right?) install almost all software to a path outside %ProgramFiles%\, i in this case installed to "C:\Games\Alpha Centauri\". > [Terran.exe] and the DRM binaries are dated (2000-01-24), none of > them describe their version on the properties Details-tab. > [ReadMe.txt](2000-01-29) seems to indicate the Alpha Centauri is > at version 3.0 (and Crossfire at 2.0) as released in this bundle. But as viewed within the game, the versions are shown as: Alpha Centauri (EP0), /Subtitleless/ 4.0(1999-05-17) Alpha Centauri (EP1), Alien Crossfire 2.0(1999-12-20) > > My User Account type is 'Administrator'. > > Made a Shortcut to [Terran.exe] ; > Shortcut-tab ; Advanced... ; > Run as Administrator > Compatibility-tab ; Change settings for all users ; > Compatibility mode = ? > (Win95 & Win98 -> AppCrash in [Terran.icd]) > (Skipped over trying WinNT 4.0 & WinNT 5.00.x) > (Tried next one and it works for me.) > Compatibility mode = WinXP SP2 > Disable Visual themes > Disable Desktop composition > > Didn't test so i don't know what if anything in the above > settings that might not be needed. > Tested with using 'WinXP SP3' compatibility mode for [TerranX.exe] and that worked just as well. (not that i want to) but with them two set and [AXStart.exe] similarly configured i can start either game via the launcher. -- Please don't go. The drones need you. They look up to you.
