StarCraft II - Just One Profile?

Hi everybody! This game only allows one profile? Ever? WTF?!? Whenever I get a new game I usually fire it up and take it for a spin to see how I like it. This is normally done with a throwaway profile (should a profile be required) and after I play a couple levels and get the gist I start up a new profile and proceed. This weekend I decided to start up a new profile in StarCraft II and looked and looked and looked and couldn't find this setting/command anywhere. I assumed it was getting too late or I'd had too many beers and would try again during the day. The next afternoon I resumed my search to no avail. A quick web search turned up a few posts saying that this really is "the way it is." Blizzard (being oh, so generous) has heard so many complaints that they may allow *ONE* profile change for free but would charge a steep price after that. So I will never again see that opening cut scene? I'm stuck with a lame user profile name and all the mistakes I made are stuck on my record? Anyone know how to flush my profile and start the game over again? My options right now seem to be continue my current game or never play it again. That's retarded ... or I am. - Sheldon

If you talk about game loss, it not mistakes, but events. Every player win and loss, this is experience. Those statistics help to game engine to match players for versus. Seems strange, but I'd wager you'll quickly overcome any dings on your rating. I think phenomena might be an after effect of Blizzard wanting to go to the real id, with real names. Cheers, Carl

Guess I would rather see it as a prelude to playing the game (to hype me up) instead of eating popcorn and watching CGI on my PC -- but at least if I can watch again that is something. >> Anyone know how to flush my profile and start the game over again? Yeah ... it just seems strange to me. When I finish the campaign (assuming I find the motivation to play) will I need to buy another copy of the game to play the campaign again? That doesn't make sense. - Sheldon

I didn't yet finish the campaign, but AFAIK, once completed, you could replay any mission at will, or even play the mission you left around. And for sure, you could start over a new campaign at anytime. -- Hugo

I did some more digging last night and found how to restart the game so at least there is that. It was actually fairly obvious so I don't know how I missed it. Still stuck with the goofy profile THAT MAY NOT BE CHANGED UNTIL DEATH but at least now I can give a go with a fresh start. Thanks for all the replies. - Sheldon

I can do this > with every other one of my 100+ other PC games. <delurk> I for one welcome the one-profile thing; there's a couple reasons for it that I don't think anyone else has mentioned. Maybe no one here plays multiplayer much. I guess I'll represent the multiplayer contingent. In Warcraft 3 smurphing was rampant on the multiplayer ladder. It's when highly skilled players create new accounts, which begin as if they were new players. The idea is to get the matching system to pair you against players much weaker than you. Because no one wants to actually, you know, lose. After all, a 50-50 record is for losers, and never mind that the system is supposed to pair you against people that are an even match. Another issue was players who would join team games and deliberately lose or attack their teammates, simply to be a general bastard; doing this on a second account kept your main one clean. (I'm not sure, but I think Blizzard may have eventually started banning CD keys for this) I don't play WoW but as I understand they have similar problems. As a social game, reputation matters there, I guess; and some players would maintain separate accounts so that they could be a jackoff on one (particularly on Blizzard's official forum) without making enemies on the account they actually played on. The one profile system (according to Blizzard -- believe them or not, as you will) is essentially supposed to be a check on that kind of ubiquitous player jackassery...it removes smurphing entirely and gives griefers a lasting reputation. Battlenet in general is populated mainly by human-shaped sewage; if not being able to change my name is the price of sewage treatment, I'll pay it. (I don't know if it's specifically bnet that's like this; the only not-blizzard RTS I play is supreme commander, and as its community has been reduced to old hard-core regulars and almost no one else, they're mostly polite) The only real complaint I have about the one-profile system is that I wish it didn't apply to offline play. The lack of LAN play annoys the hell out of me too. Not to mention that I hate that the game has to phone home. I still play games that are twenty years old; the idea that SC2 will simply *not work* once Blizzard is out of business (no company lasts forever) is one that bothers me greatly. >>> Anyone know how to flush my profile and start the game over again? But I can't see how. There's a "New Campaign" button under single player, I believe; that may be what you want. -- Tasogare

I know I am not alone in disliking this DRM method. It's not the Internet connection/phone home part that bugs me (I have a good and reliable connection). What bugs me is having to create a unique profile for all of my games even though I never play any of them online. Late at night I often feel like playing something for a bit before bed. Oops. Can't just insert the disk, gotta log in. What e-mail address or username did I use for this game I installed three years ago? Hmm ... not that one. Maybe I'll try this? Nope. Rats. For all the games that require the CD in the drive I can just write this info on a post-it-note but for all my No CD required games I'm gonna have to start a little notepad with all my account logins and passwords. Thanks for your post. - Sheldon, last of the 'doesn't play online games' gamers

I just checked this -- you can play single player without a connection, but it looks like you need to connect at least once before it will let you do so. Though it's mostly irrelevant to me because you certainly can't play multiplayer without a bnet connection, and multiplayer is what I'm mostly interested in. So for all practical purposes, once battlenet is dead sometime in the distant future, the game doesn't work anymore. -- Tasogare
