Looks like some of the guys behind Age of Empires (Robot Entertainment) have created a new game with Microsoft called Age of Empires Online. It's going to be free to play. Haven't tried it myself so I can't comment on the game play but the designer says it will be much like AOE. A few negatives are that it looks a bit cartoonish and it uses Games For Windows Live. They say it will be a persistent world so your efforts today may be built on what others did last week or even last year. In any case they have a beta going on now that you can sign up for. I'll probably sign up and give it a try. If anyone has already played the beta please speak up with any information on how the game compares to the original. http://ageofempiresonline.com/beta/

However, you'll probably have to purchase the game just like other retail or downloadable games. > They say it will be a persistent world so your efforts today may be > built on what others did last week or even last year. > > In any case they have a beta going on now that you can sign up for. > I'll probably sign up and give it a try. The game will require online connectivity to GFWL servers similar to Starcraft2 requiring Battlenet connection. However unlike Starcraft 2's single player, there won't be an offline mode. -- Noman
