Sounds good to me but if it requires you to be online in single player games
I ain't buying it.

Has there yet been any word at all on the copy protection schemes
for Civ V? That is, is there any *concrete* reason to panic, or are we
all just paranoid on general principle?

No, it just seems to be the trend these days.

*nod* I was asking because I'm guilty of the same thing. There
are copy protection schemes on the market that could, I believe, keep me
from buying a new Civilization game; and I'm willing to intervene now if
it would help.

Hmmm, that preview gives me ambivalent feelings. One one hand, I've been
hankering after a hex-based civ game since Civilization II came out, on
the other hand I remember only too well how stacking of units was touted
as a great progress in the military side of things in Civ, and now
they're doing away with it again? Ha! That just doesn't make sense to
me. If I want to play single unit hex based, I may as well stick with
Wesnoth ... (which I haven't played in a year or three, b.t.w.)

Take2 hasn't used any of that crap yet and the last patch for Civ4 removed
the CD check so we should be ok.

Your kidding. Yeah, that's a deal breaker for me too.

It's not broken. It's...advanced.

Are you sure about that? This news made me happy so I went online to see
the latest patch was 1.6.1 so I downloaded it, ran it, and discovered I
already had 1.6.1.

So I tried to launch Civ 4 and ... "Please insert the disk". :(

I was also as excited as you were. After looking through bunches of
patch notes, it seems he was talking about the latest patch for the
Beyond the Sword expansion. So, if you have both expansions (as I do
not), then presumably the latest patch gives you that option.

p.s. There was indeed a patch for vanilla Civ4 after 1.61
(1.7something; I am not at my home computer right now), but you are
missing out on very little by not having it.

Ah ... yeah, I don't have that expansion either. Thanks for clarifying.

Really? I looked on the 2K site and the free/ad sites and they all
served up 1.6.1.

Firaxis' site has patch 1.74. It is 60.3 MB, apparently available
since July 20, 2007.

http://www.firaxis.com/support/support_detail.php?gameid=6&patch=1

http://www.firaxis.com/downloads/Patch/Civ4Patch1.74_Final.exe

Again, it is scarcely worth the download. Below is the first page I
found with a summary of the changes.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=6183

Some people seem to have had problems with it, perhaps due to an old
version of DirectX.

Interesting. Thanks again. I probably won't bother. The game plays fine
as is. It was the 'no CD' aspect that had me most interested.

Much obliged.

ps: Saw some screenshots of Civ V last night and it looks like an
interesting visual change.
