This post from EA_Apoc at the C&C forums cracked me up, I honestly thought
he was being serious about it and then BAM! it hits ya, check it out:

Hey everyone,

I noticed a number of you had questions concerning the back of our box, so I
figured now is a good time to remind you of how the installation/online
works.

First thing to be clear about, Command & Conquer 4 has NO DRM. Zip, zero,
zilch, none. We already made this clear. Second, you do not need the disc
in the machine to play Command & Conquer 4, however the following is how it
works:

AFTER you install Command & Conquer 4 with the disc on your machine, when
you try to LOGIN at the Launcher for the first time, it will ask you for
your serial key. You will enter in your serial key to activate your Master
EA Account. The serial key, like in our past games, can only be activated
for 1 master account. You cannot install multiple EA Master accounts on one
serial key. You can create multiple Commander Personas however, so if you
and your brothers each want your own Persona account with experience, etc,
you can do that. Just has to be under the same Master EA account as in our
past games.

You can install the game from the disc as many times as you want on any
machine. Re-install, etc.

You do not need the disc in your machine to play. Your EA account just needs
to have been activated by your serial key. After that, you can play Command
& Conquer 4 on ANY MACHINE that has it installed. All you need to do is
login.

To play Command & Conquer 4, the computer needs to be connected to the
internet. We've always made that clear as well.

So there ya go, no DRM, no disc in the drive necessary, just activate your
account with your serial key and presto, you're ready to go. It's actually
much easier than before.

BWAHH HA HAHHA HAAAAAAAAA! !!!!! THE FUNNIEST SHIT I'VE READ ALL YEAR!!!
Just like Ubisoft's DRM, you have to be online for single player and if the
connection drops you're out. At least Ubisoft doesn't pretend it's not DRM.
Zip, zero, zilch, none DRM? Ah yes, they already made this clear. And it's
easier than before! ROFLMAO!!!!!!

I agree it seems to be exactly the same as Ubisoft's DRM scheme to my
uneducated eyes.

Apparenty to be widely avoided. Read the following "user-review" I
copied from a related thread in another forum:-

Too bad it will suck and be the same game as C&C3 and RA3.

Actually, the gameplay is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING like any other C&C game,
much to its chagrin. It borrowed ideas from other, better implemented
games (such as Dawn of War II) and implemented them in a half-assed
fashion. There is no base building or resource gathering at all. As a
matter of fact, it works like this:

You start out with an MCV (now renamed to Crawler). You have to pick
the kind of MCV you want - there are 3. Each gives you roughly 1/3 of
the units you can build. You don't pay for units, there is a Command
Point cap (of 50 in campaign mode). Each unit costs 3 or more Command
Points. Each unit type is really only good at attacking a specific one
or two units from the other side. If you don't match them up
rock/paper/scissors style, then your units do very little damage. One
would think that this would promote going in with a variety of units,
but no, the Command Point cap is so low you will rarely ever get more
than 8 units on the screen at a time. It is far better to run in with
whatever you have, see what the other guy's got, let your guys die and
build what is needed to kill off the other guy's stuff.

The game is engineered for multiplayer, even when in single player
campaign mode. If you don't co-op play, the single player game is much
harder (due to low Command Point cap). In the SP campaign, the
computer usually has 2 or 3 MCV's (and 2 or 3 times the Command Point
cap) that you do. If the AI wasn't so bad, the game would be
unbeatable. Oh - and here's the icing on the cake. You have to "Level
Up" your commander to unlock the better (and more expensive) units.
The best units require you to be level 20. The paltry 14-mission SP
campaign (that is, 7 per side) will not likely get you up past 15 so
you won't be able to construct the best units in the game at all
unless you play a lot of skirmish or online multiplayer first
(remember, your commander level applies across all modes). If you
bought the game for the storyline conclusion to the Tiberium Universe
C&C games, it has thus far proven to be weak at best, but I am only on
the last GDI mission - haven't done the NOD ones yet.

Other problem spots - the view is claustrophobic. You can not zoom out
to a reasonable level on the map. It's like eating soup with your nose
just above the bowl. Also, the low unit cap combined with nearly
infinite Crawler respawns (though delayed) makes defensive or
capture-and-hold missions an exercise in frustration at best. Capture
a node. Move on tot he next one, the bad guys capture the other node.
In a vicious circle. Most multiplayer games turn in to this in my
experience.

To say I am bitterly disappointed in this game would be a dramatic
understatement. Don't get me wrong - Supreme Commander II != Supreme
Commander either, but at least the game was still FUN (if somewhat
dumbed down). C&C 4 just plain sucks ass. No nice way to put that. It
does. I want to write in to EA and ask them when C&C 4 is coming out -
no, really, I mean the REAL one. . .

The only reason I am even playing this game is to see the end of the
story. If it were not for that, it would have already been
uninstalled.

[/rant] - man, I feel a little better

It IS the same as Ubisoft's. The only minor difference here is that at
least C&C4 has multiplayer, so you'd have to be attached to their servers
to play that anyways.

But just like Ubi's AC2 DRM, if your server connection goes bye-bye, so
does your game progress. I read a review of C&C4 in which the reviewer's
internet hiccuped, causing him to have to reload from his last save game
which cost him several hours of play. He blew it off though. Personally,
if this had happened to me while playing a single player *preview* copy
I'd be about this || close to giving the game a failing grade.

Sure, playing multiplayer and having something go wrong is one thing but
if I'm playing a single player campaign, don't punish me because I don't
have an immaculate internet connection.
