For some reason, while washing the dishes, I thought of the undead settler hoax in Master of Magic and was chuckling. (The hoax claimed that if you turn a settler unit into undead, it can then build an undead city from which you can churn out all other undead units.) The only other notable hoax I can recall from my gaming experience is the claim that one can resurrect Aeris from Final Fantasy 7 by going through extremely detailed set of fool steps. Can anyone name any other, just for my own curiosity? Thanks.

I don't know if it qualifies as a hox, but there used to be rumors that you could get to the volcano in the arcade Battle Zone. I knew a lot of people who were convinced that if you got really high scores on arcade video games, the machine would take you picture and give it to the air force so they could try to recruit you to fly fighter planes. The most famous hoax I know - The Tomb Raider nude code. People believed in this for PC and Playstation. Finally hackers had to make Nude Raider, but I think PSX owners are out of luck with that! I don't know if it's notable, but someone was posting the details of
some made-up encounters on the King of Dragon Pass forum
<http://network54.com/Hide/Forum/48065>. The hoax seemed to take people
in, probably because people have reported playing the game for a year
and still discovering new events.

Plus there was a stupid quest in the expansion pack to get a cow suit.

Hmm, I think in Simcity 2000, the 'Launch Arcologies' would qualify as a hoax. They look like they take off in to space, but don't. Outpost might qualify. There was supposed to be a game in it, but there really wasn't. Also, a couple things in the orignal Elite were mentioned in the manual, like generation ships, but weren't in the game. A lot of people looked for those.

At the end of the original Sgt. Pepper album, in the little groove that runs to the spindle, was a little nonsense noise. If you played it back it said something, I don't remember what. At the end of "I'm so Tired" was a little bit of backwards John mumbling, that if you played backwards said "Paul's dead and I miss 'im". I don't think there were any such clues on the Abbey Road album, other than the cover picture which depicted Paul walking across the street barefoot, supposedly some kind of sign of the dead. - Bob Perez "John Gwynn" <john....@tfn.com> wrote in message news:GyI96.2543$tD2.182074@newsread1.prod.itd.earthlink.net... > Playing Abbey Road backwards was supposed to bring back Paul from the dead?? > > or was that Sgt Pepper's???? > > > "Htn963" <htn...@cs.com> wrote in message > news:20010118025359.08322.00002460@ng-cd1.news.cs.com... > > For some reason, while washing the dishes, I thought of the undead > settler > > hoax in Master of Magic and was chuckling. Well, this is from the ancient history of coin-op arcade games (and hence
OT), but there once was a rumor that, in the original Battlezone game, that
if you kept driving your tank in the same direction long enough (avoiding
enemy tanks and buzz bombs all the while), that you would eventually
REACH said hills, and find yourself on the outskirts of the enemy tank
factory...
A friend of mine in college used to play this for hours (trading off every
100 points until we ran up some wild scores), and we never found that
mythical tank factory...

In article <20010118025359...@ng-cd1.news.cs.com>, Htn963 <htn...@cs.com> says... <snip> > Can anyone name any other, just for my own curiosity? Thanks. There's the Mirage in Frontier: Elite 2. To get the ship, you'd need the following (from memory): 1. Elite Combat rating. 2. Rank of Prince (highest rank in the Imperial Navy). 3. User ident from the Sirius Corporation, which you get from the Managing Director. You're supposed to fly to the edge of the galaxy, where you'll be approached by the flagship of the Empire. You'll get a message, and then you get the Mirage. Nobody is sure how the rumour started, but there's speculation that it originated as a submission to the cheats section in an Amiga magazine (in the old days, some mags used to give prizes for published tips/cheats). The rumour reached the zenith of its credibility when it was included in Tony Dillon's mostly excellent book 'Secrets of Frontier Elite.' There are, of course, a large number of things which show the rumour to be bogus. * There is no reference anywhere in the game code to a user ident from the Sirius Corporation or even a means of getting one. However, it is possible for the phrase "Director such-and-such of Sirius Corp" to appear in the game, but this is as part of a randomly generated assassination mission. * There is only one 'unidentified' model in the game - a Thargoid ship which can sometimes be seen derelict on the ground near research bases on photography / bombing missions. * Which edge of the galaxy, which solar system? Not to mention the fact that you'd almost certainly either run out of fuel or your drive fail due to lack of servicing long before you got there. * Getting the required ratings would take a *very* long time - thus making checking the accuracy of the rumour very difficult. * Braben has gone on record denying that the Mirage exists (although he put a reference to a Mirage II in one of the journal articles in First Encounters as a joke). If you do a Deja search in alt.fan.elite for Mirage you should get a load of stuff from the semi-regular debates on this topic. -- Graham 'Jades' Thurlwell Jades' FFE Site: http://www.jades.org/ffe.htm The best Frontier First Encounters site on the net

There was one with The 7th Guest about using the puzzle hint/help to often. I think it was you would miss some cut scenes, not sure but it was something the player would not want to happen. Were these hoaxes put out by players or the game designers? 7th was by the designers. I've played MoM but never heard of that one. Never played the other games.
