I'm getting really sick of this CD only shit. Is this supposed to suppress piracy or something? Software companies think that coming out with games on CD-ROM only will increase their sales, because instead of John Doe #1 buying the game and giving a copy to John Doe #2 so they can play over the modem, they figure both John Doe #1 and John Doe #2 will go out and buy one copy each. Bull shit. John Doe #1 (that's me in this scenario) refuses to buy any more CD only games unless they can be installed and run without the CD in the drive, because they are a pain in the ass. What's more, my buddy (we will call him John Doe #2) is a 30 year old non-technoid who would not plunk down $50 on a computer game if his life depended on it, and the only games he ever plays are those I give him copies of. And since I can't give him copies of copy protected CD games, then I don't have anyone to play with over the modem, and that means that I am not going to buy the fucking game at all. So instead of selling two copies, the software company just sold minus one copy. Also, I have 3 PCs. I like to be able to install whatever software I own on any one of my 3 PCs, incase I want to have friends over for network play. Only one of my systems has a CD-ROM, so CDs sort of cramp my style. Yeah I know that software companies like to believe that guys like me go out and buy one copy of Doom or Heretic for each machine that it will be run on, but that's not the reality or even reasonable to expect of a typical gamer. I will buy only ONE copy of a game and I will install it on any machine that I use, including my PC at work (and if my boss happens to be reading this, all I can say is don't even think about firing me because you need me to disengage that trojan horse program I wrote and installed on the primary server down in the IT building once a week. If you fire me it will act like a time bomb, destroying all company data within 10 days of my departure).. (heh heh..... Ok so I am kidding about the Trojan Horse thing... it sounded good though...) Back to my bitching!!!! The whole appeal of Civnet is that it's multiplayer.. If I can't play it on my network here at home then I'm not interested. Spectrum Holobyte, I can sum it up in two words.. NO SALE.

Instead of buying two copies, you buy none, >therefore the company sells nothing to you, losing nothing. No, when I said minus one copy, I meant they will be selling ONE LESS COPY THAN THEY WOULD HAVE SOLD if they just released it on floppies. Everything is relative; the words "minus one" do not necessarily describe a negative number. 7 is a positive number but it is still 8 minus one. Does that deGumpify it for you?

No, no, and no again. You missed the point. I am not against CD-ROMS as a medium. I am against key disk copy protection (meaning the CD ROM has to be in the CD drive at all times during game play). Now, if the game, fully installed, would require 600+ megs of hard disk space then it seems reasonable that most people dont have that much space on their hard disks to devote to one game. But just incase someone wants to play that same game 5 years from now, when everybody has 100 Gig hard drives, they should make installing the entire game an option. And if you're laughing about us all having 100 gig drives in 5 years, don't. I can remember in 1990, when my buddy was installing his 40 meg drive, he scoffed when I said in a few years everyone will be talking about hard drives in gigabytes instead of megabytes. He now denies ever doing it :).
